Fort Basel – Weekend Events

Fort Lauderdale liJr

Fear not if you can’t make it down to Miami this weekend for all the Art Basel madness.  Here are 6 events to get your art on right in Broward County (make sure to click the underlined links for more info):

1.  Indie Craft Bazaar is hosting a “flea-esta” City-Wide Market in Pompano Beach on Saturday from 10am-4pm. Browse gently used goods, vintage items, and crafts while enjoying some food, drinks, and entertainment plus other goodies.  The event is free and so is parking. Emma Lou Olson Civic Center, 1801 NE 6th St, Pompano Bch, FL

2.  If Pompano is a bit out of your way, be sure to stop by Art: Sunny Side Up Holiday Indie Craft + Gift Show at War Memorial Auditorium. This event also takes place on Saturday but from 11am-6pm.  While similar to City-Wide Market, Sunny Side Art seems to plan on offering more handmade items- art, home goods, jewelry, repurposed goods, and a lot more.  Both markets sound like a sure bet for picking up some unique items, and if properly planned you should have no problem making a day out of both.  War Memorial Auditorium, 800 NE 8th St, Ft Lauderdale, FL

3.  Green Room will be holding their own Fort Basel Finale Party with 15 artists, 2 bands, and 3 DJs.  For a complete list of participating artists click the link above.  No cover and everyone’s invited.  Open vodka bar from 9-11pm w/ RSVP.  Green Room Nightclub, 109 SW 2nd Ave, Ft Lauderdale, FL

4.  The Museum of Art Ft Lauderdale has 3 or 4 murals either in the works or finished (clearly we haven’t fully investigated this) as part of a new image they’d like to create in “one of the most dramatic transformations of the Museum’s building since it was completed twenty-five years ago in 1986.”  The murals are intended to bring a more urban feel to the Museum and are: “Band” by Arturo Herrera, “Acid-Free” (pictured at the top of this post) by Jen Stark (facing Andrews Avenue), a Roberto Behar and Rosario Marquardt painting in the breezeway, and window designs (facing First Avenue) by Gavin Perry.  This is the perfect opportunity to grab a cup of coffee (we recommend Brew, of course) and take a little stroll through Downtown and do some exploring.  If you happen to snap any pics we’d love for you to share them on our Facebook page!  MoAFL, 1 E Las Olas Blvd, Ft Lauderdale, FL

5.  Help the Children’s Diagnostic and Treatment Center and catch a flick at the same time at Cinema Paradiso‘s Can Film Festival this weekend. From December 2-4 admission for films is just two canned goods or one new and unwrapped toy.  For movie times and more info go to the FLIFF website here. Cinema Paradiso, 503 SE 6th St, Ft Lauderdale, FL

6.  Art and Culture Center of Hollywood is offering free admission to their Artist Unknown/The Free World Exhibit from 12-4pm on Saturday and Sunday. View hundreds of photos (like these) paired and collected from around the country by John D. Monteith and Oliver Wasow.  I definitely would not miss this!  If you can’t make it this weekend, the photos will be on view until January 29, 2012 with $7 admission.  Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, 1650 Harrison St, Hollywood, FL

Speaking of Art & Music…Dialect.

Until the last year or so the local art and music scene was dwindling on a thin line in Fort Lauderdale.  With a re-vamp in venues and some very ambitious and talented artists, the scene is starting to thrive and its rapid growth looks incredibly promising.  Almost every week a local band graces one of our Fort Lauderdale stages or some über-hip resident socialites are throwing an art show/warehouse party.  This Thursday is no different when Twilight Notes and Radio-Active Records present the monthly (or bi-monthly) coffee shop-cum-art gallery event, Dialect, at Brew Urban Cafe in downtown Fort Lauderdale.  DJs Adam Foster, Mikey Ramirez, Damask, and Esoteric are providing the sounds; your goal is to sip a brew, caffeinated or hop-infused, and enjoy the wonderful works of exhibiting artists Jose Lopez, Estefania Lopez, Ilian Velasco, Kazilla, Raymond Brown, and N! Satterfield.  A typical night at a Dialect event means the coffee shop and its patrons will spew out on to SW 2nd street downtown, socializing over a few choice beverages, and supporting the local indie art scene.  The FTL Collective strongly encourages you to tell your friends to tell their friends and come out to Brew tonight at 8 pm.  The event is free to the public and a majority of the artwork will be for sale if you are so inclined to stock your abode with some lovely local artistry.

A Little Bump N’ Grind

by Strawberry Jam

Fort Lauderdale Brew1 300x200Too many South Floridians have a predictable, yet questionable, love affair with their local Starbucks.  Lucky for us, there are several inviting options in Ft Lauderdale to get your caffeine fix while supporting unique and local businesses. Here are a few spots to either refuel or stay awhile and bump elbows with your neighbors.

Caffe Rustica

1826 E Sunrise Blvd.
Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33304

Located between two of Ft Lauderdale’s apples of our eyes, Radioactive Records and the Gateway movie theater, sits Caffe Rustica.  With its scrumptious, homemade treats and carefully crafted beverages, Caffe Rustica is the perfect spot to grab a pick-me-up before browsing the ever-changing selection at Radioactive or before heading to that late-night movie.  Outside seating is available, though its located right on Sunrise Boulevard.

Undergrounds Coffeehaus

2743 E Oakland Park Blvd
Fort Lauderdale, FL 33306

This locale will make you feel like you’re in your good friends’ home if not your own, especially with the presence of helpful owner Aileen.  Undergrounds Coffeehaus aims to please everyone with their wide variety of books, themed nights, Turkish coffee, crafting sessions, and nearly two dozen kinds of tater tots.  Most books, art, and other items around for entertainment are available for purchase.  Events scheduled regularly so head over to their website to keep up with what’s going on.

Brew Urban Café

209 SW 2nd Ave.
Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33301

Broken-in leather chairs, a nice selection of national newspapers, and enticing blends of the day- it comes as no surprise that Brew was deservedly voted New Times’ best coffee shop of 2010.  Enjoy some baked goods, free Wi-Fi, and super friendly service, among all the other amenities you’d expect to find in your comfy neighborhood coffee shop.  Make sure you get your coffee card stamped and the 10th coffee is on them!  When the sun goes down, come back and have yourself a beer or glass of wine here- they have microbrews!  Two locations:  Himmarshee Street and Victoria Park.
