Get Your Rod and Beef At The Field

By Strawberry Jam

Being a longtime Rod enthusiast, I naturally held some skepticism and high expectations when I first heard of “Hot Rod”, South Florida’s “legendary” Rod Stewart impersonator. Nevertheless, I remained quite excited over the months I’d waited until we could finally make a Wednesday night performance to see Hot Rod in the flesh at The Field Irish Pub in Dania.

What was supposed to be a 7:30pm show turned into an almost two-hour guessing game as to when the “rock star” himself would grace the stage. Meanwhile, he worked the crowd: schmoozing the ladies, posing for pictures, and accepting drinks. Clearly, the man had a following, and soon we’d find out if it was rightfully so.

Once taking the mic, he stated his first one would be a warm-up, and after receiving a warm reception shortly thereafter, he declared there was no point in finishing the song if you’ve already gotten the applause. Touché. The rest of the set included favorites and top hits (Maggie May, Young Turks) as well as a few slow ones (Tonight’s the Night). Overall, I give Hot Rod an A+ for performance and look and a B+ for voice, no complaints.

In addition to a pretty solid performance, The Field serves quite the yummy dishes. This trip we enjoyed the corned beef and cabbage, obviously, coconut shrimp (I know, but it sounded so good, and was), Irish Potato Soup, and Country Bread. The corned beef was nice- juicy, tender, and filling (enough for two meals). The soup, one of my favorites, was rich and creamy- all that you’d dream of in a potato soup. I could easily order a bowl and call it a meal in itself. Not to mention, an order of bread is literally a loaf served on a wooden board with a serrated knife. The coconut shrimp, one of the night’s specials, was served with an orange marmalade, and, like all our other dishes, was exactly what you’d expect- in a very good way. Everything was fresh and tasty as it should be and only set us back about $26 before tip, not to mention set to a pretty amusing show.

In addition to great food and entertainment, The Field is quaintly decorated like and old (large) wooden farmhouse and service is on par.

Catch Hot Rod Wednesdays “at” 7:30 and (not yet reviewed) 2ofUs (Beatles Tribute Band) Tuesdays at 7:30.

For hours, directions, and more info, head to The Field’s website.

Boats on Parade

Fort Lauderdale winterfest 234x300By Strawberry Jam

While you may be thinking “once is enough” when it comes to watching boat parades, there are actually several good reasons for you to change it up this weekend and drag your butt to the water to partake in the annual event this Saturday. While the $200 Grand Marshal Showboat tickets and $21 Birch State Park Grandstand tickets are both sold out, lucky for you you can view the parade for FREE along the intracoastal anywhere from the Broward Center for the Performing Arts to Lake Santa Barbara, South of Atlantic Blvd. According to the Winterfest website, East of the Stranahan House is supposed prime-time viewing space.

This years theme of “Dancing Through the Decades” will appropriately feature everyone’s favorite overly-exposed Dancing With the Stars’ co-host Brooke Burke. If you’re lucky, maybe you can catch a glimpse of her dazzling shadowy figure from the shore. Make it a little more interesting by bringing a flask and taking a swig every time you hear her name in the crowd, double duty if it’s paired with any adjectives pertaining to her “hot” or otherwise described body or its parts. (Drink responsibly, there will most likely be kids on every side of you)

Though it’s expected to warm up slightly by the weekend, a slightly cooler night will still offer two bonuses: an excuse to snuggle up to your paramour and an opportunity to practice your adult version of hot chocolate. If you need some pointers check out some of these drink recipes; or simply add a shot of Bailey’s, Kahlua, or Peppermint Schnapps to your thermos of Swiss Miss.

It may be somewhat of a family affair, but it’s still an anticipated yearly event for the young and old and it’s never too old to start your own traditions whether by yourself or with your SO. If anything, it’s a decent opportunity to get your fix of increasingly diminishing Christmas lights. The 39th annual Winterfest Boat Parade is to take place this Saturday, December 11th at 6:30 pm. Get there early to get a good view. Check  out the mapped route here. Also, read Miami Bike Scene’s post about the Red Bull Barge Spin, a floating BMX park that will be making an appearance in this year’s parade.

Scott Stapp, Protoman, & Gaps…Which One Doesn’t Belong?

by Mig

The name Scott Stapp evokes several different images in people’s minds. Some people probably still remember him as the religious, lead singer of post-grunge band Creed, who wrote a heartfelt song for his kid that ended up being the bands top hit With Arms Wide Open. I tend to remember him for his slew of outrageous, negative publicity: the feud with rap-rock pioneer Fred Durst and the boxing match that never happened, the Thanksgiving Day drunken brawl between Stapp and the lead singer of 311 in a Baltimore hotel lounge, the infamous “it’s good to be king” sex tape with Kid Rock (not with each other), and my favorite — his latest, idiotic song about the the Florida Marlins.

In lieu of his acoustic gig tomorrow at Revolution, I’ve decided to grace you with the video for Marlins Will Soar (at the bottom of the post). I know many of you have probably seen this (it’s been mentioned nationally, usually in jest), but it always makes my day a little brighter. In my opinion, it’s still not as bad as T-Pain’s rendition of the Miami Dolphins touchdown song or Jimmy Buffet’s Fins (Dolphin’s Version).

If you’re like me, and don’t like wasting your hard earned greenbacks to watch a washed up, train wreck strumming his wooden guitar — you can do that for free at Briny’s anyway — you might think about checking out 2 talented, local rappers, Protoman and Gaps, at Monterey Club tonight. The event is being heralded as a birthday extravaganza, no cover charge. Below are some song streams. Go to their myspace accounts (click on links above), they have a lot more tuneage and even some free downloads.

Protoman – Wake Up

Protoman – Can I Have It Like That

Gaps – Another Fresh Cut (Incision Remix)

Gaps – While You Sleep

And now, I leave you with the infamous viral hit about fish soaring. What the hell was he thinking?
