Interview With Danny Hammontree, Artist At This Thursday’s Dialect

By Strawberry Jam

Thursday, Twilight Notes and Freedom Art are teaming up for this month’s Dialect to bring you another exceptional night of art and music. This time they’ll be featuring nine photographers from the South Florida area and DJs Kent Lawlor, Mikey Ramirez, and Adam Foster. Come and lounge in the intimate comfort of Brew, soak up some good tunes, and perhaps buy some art to take home with you. We’re super-excited for this one and below have an interview with one of the artists, Danny Hammontree.

This will be your second time participating in Dialect but you’ve been around for a while. How and when did you get started in photography?

I have always had an interest in photography but didn’t get into it seriously until 2003 when I bought my first serious camera. In the beginning I started shooting everything but most of all my children. At one point I thought I wanted to to do glamour/fashion photography but quickly developed a distaste for it. In 2005 I also developed a huge distaste for George W. Bush and the decision to go into Iraq. I heard about an anti-war rally in Miami and went down to photograph it. My intentions in photographing were because I was against the war but also because I felt it was a great way to photograph people without having to ask them first if I could. When I got home I quickly posted my photos to art and photography communities I was a part of online namely deviantART and Flickr and got great responses from them. This feedback fueled my interest and I began hunting down opportunities to photograph social and political events I was most interested in and most importantly believed in. I feel the meshing of passions made my photography better and inspired me more.

2ofUs Gets By Quite Well With A Little Help From Their Friends

By Strawberry Jam

We previously posted about the already tasty and lively Field Irish Pub hosting the Hot Rod Show. Read below to find out about their charming duo 2ofUs Beatles Tribute band.

It seems to me that most people either love the nostalgia and music of the Beatles or can’t stomach their “cheesiness” as they might call it. Any Beatles fan would know that the songs go beyond corny and delve into concepts and phases like few others have, from pop to mature experimentation, carving a path that many would follow in one way or another. 2ofUs the Tribute Band seems to appropriately showcase the evolution of the Beatles’ music through a variety of songs, though I admit, maybe dressed a bit cheesy (they wore identical outfits this night).

In no time, it’s evident that the two do justice to the songs lyrically, vocally, and instrumentally, not to mention physically look the part (McCartney and Lennon, whose songs they feature). The duo take turns singing separately as well as harmonizing, making up for a slightly smaller crowd than Hot Rod, by filling The Field with the notion that you might actually be watching the real thing years ago in a small pub in Liverpool.

As the cherry on top, their humble (though solid) audience adds to the experience through genuine smiles and other expressions of satisfaction, a variety of tambourines, song requests which were immediately honored, and group drinking. A proper night at the pub.

Side Note: Though The Field’s menu is largely designed for the carnivore in you, there are a couple of fish options and a surprisingly satisfying Veggie Burger. The sandwich, which actually doesn’t taste like it was dusted off in the back before being thrown in the fryer, may very well be made on-site,with chopped onion, whole peas and green beans of some sort visible in the patty. Update: Though it sure tastes homemade, The Field confirms their veggie burger is not made there.

2ofUs Beatles Tribute Band can be seen at various venues including Waxy’s on 17th Street and Lauderdale Grill on Cordova Rd. View all gigs here.

12 Must-See Bands at the SW 3rd Avenue Music Festival in Downtown FTL

We’re often subjected to crossing county lines to witness quality, massive local lineups (i.e. Zit Fest, Lake Worth It Festival, Respectable Street yearly anniversary party, Death To The Sun, Sweatstock, to name a few). I’m not complaining- I’m more than happy to make the drive to Miami or Palm Beach to support South Florida’s burgeoning music and arts scene. It’s just kind of nice to have a high caliber, local music event in our own backyard every once in awhile. like the one we’ll be experiencing tomorrow. Well, thanks to the people at Revolution and Poor House, we finally have our own epic gathering of quality South Florida bands, the SW 3rd Avenue Music Festival (WARNING: don’t judge this event by its mundane name). With 25 bands on 5 stages with overlapping set times, 1 skateboard half pipe, and a handful DJs, you’ll have a lot of tough decisions to make in regards to what to see. Note: 4 of the 5 stages are FREE, Revolution’s stage where Nonpoint is headlining costs $11.

Although the FTLC staff plans on mingling at every stage at some point, we’ve compiled a list of 12, what we think, must-see performances this Friday. New Times did a great post covering music for all the acts on their Green Room stage. Click here to stream audio from Lavola, The New, Plains, Young Circles, The Dewars, and John Ralston.  We’ve provided the rest.

Dania Jai-Alai Sold, Sort Of

By Strawberry Jam

Dania Jai-Alai

It was recently announced that the Dania Jai-Alai is set to close in September on an $80 million sale.  For some, it will be a bitter end to a vintage sport that has been around for thirty-plus years.  But according to the president and CEO of Las Vegas-based Boyd Gaming which owns the space, Dania Jai-Alai “no longer fits our current growth strategy.”  It is supposedly being sold to private investors through an all-cash deal.  You can read the article in Forbes here.

Dania Beach has long been known as a quirky place. It is Broward’s first city (incorporated in 1904), “stuck in the past” some might call it, and known for it’s antiquing.  Sorry to say, but it might be time for a facelift.  Last summer, the Dania Beach Press (which apparently does not have a website) stated that the Pirates Inn (located just West of the Jai-Alai) was hoping to be marketed to a supermarket of sorts, possibly a Trader Joe’s.  You’ll have to take my word for it as we don’t have the actual article and it was in print, but you can read a similar, less specific Sun-Sentinel article about it here.  Little information is known at this time as to whether or not live jai-alai will continue.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?  Many argue that Dania would be one of the last on the list of Trader Joe’s openings, whose current closest locations are in Georgia and South Carolina.  At the same time, I think it can be said that Dania is a nice buffer between populated cities such as Aventura and Ft Lauderdale which already have a similar market (Whole Foods).  Weigh in on your opinions in the comments.

Happy Birthday, Bubble!

By Strawberry Jam

If you weren’t able to make it to The Bubble’s 2nd Birthday bash this past Saturday, you’re in luck because we’re about to get you caught up.  Below is a short vid from the night, which went down with almost a dozen bands, plenty of art, things to buy, delicious tofu tacos by Munchie One, and of course Birthday cake.  Please pardon our home movie skills, or lack thereof, as we were having much fun.  Thank you to The Bubble, the artists and musicians, and all the locals for coming out and making it an awesome night.

Make sure you add The Bubble on Facebook for info on future events.

It’s The Weekend And I’ll Party If IWAN To

Seriously, how the hell can we possibly attend all the great events in Broward this weekend? Here’s the lineup. Choose wisely.

THURSDAY

Digital Love hosts an incredible doubleheader tonight: Miami’s emerging Panic Bomber and the sophisticated punk rock duo Pocket Of Lollipops. Check out the sidebar for some Panic Bomber tunes and our latest compilation (track #8) for a Pocket Of Lollipops ditty. Normally, Digital Love has no cover, but tonight it’s $10. Luckily, if you mention “Mig” at the door you get in for FREE. Also, if you’re a regular on Thursdays you’ll get in for FREE. Party starts at 10 at the Green Room.

Laser Wolf has a excellent lineup tonight. Unfortunately, it overlaps the above mentioned Green Room party, but it’s our local bloggers duty to mention it: Live performances by Travalonia, Chris Horgan, Pretty Please, and Atlanta garage rockers Carnivores. No cover.

FRIDAY

Based on past reviews and word-of-mouth, this Friday’s Mai-Kai dance party is not to be missed. Popular vinyl DJs Sensitive Side, James Brown’s Sweat, and Mikey Ramirez will be spinning everything from funk, soul, and punk. Last go around, the party was over capacity, but no worries, the place has taken the initiative to fix the overflow problem by opening another section of the restaurant. Party starts at 9pm and ends at 2am with a happy hour running from 10 to midnight. No cover.

SATURDAY

Your weekend headliner, IWAN’s The Bubble’s 2nd Birthday Bash, is a can’t-miss event. Just in case you haven’t dropped by the artsy warehouse, the New Times sufficiently described the venue in their post about this event. The Bubble’s grand opening 2 years ago was a contributing factor in my interest in FTL’s burgeoning arts scene, and by default, a contributing factor in starting this Broward-focused blog. It’s a place worth celebrating. Come out and party at one of (if not the best) place for creative types to get together in our city. The massive band lineup includes Alexander, Dooms De Pop, Pretty Please, Radar-vs-Wolf, Low Visibility, Raffa Jo (of Raffa & Rainer), Rob Elba (of the Holy Terrors and Hearing Damage), Travalonia, Brady Newbill, Black Weather Shaman, and Loxahatchee Sinners Union. In addition to all the live music, there will be tons of local art and goodies. There will also be a mysterious “fun booth” by Penelope Lane Photography and indie tunes by Andie Sweetswirl and myself throughout the night. Bands start at 6pm. $5 cover, plus another $5 for an all-you-can-drink keg cup. The warehouse is located at 810 NE 4th Ave, FTL.

I’m not sure why the warehouses don’t get together and plan their parties so they don’t overlap, but SWARM is having a big bash at the same time as the Bubble. If for some reason, you hate me and want to disregard my above suggestion, this party should be great as well. Performances by K-the-i??? (do I have that right?), Stereo 13, Verble, and Sully. There will also be tons of art, DJs spinning, skateboard demos, and a prize wheel. Party starts at 9pm. This warehouse is located at 500 SW 21st Terrace, FTL.

The Gold Coast Beachside Bombshells opening game is against the Gainesville Roller Rebels. The match is at War Memorial Auditorium and tickets start at $10.

SUNDAY

Watch the Heat drown the Celtics.

If you don’t like basketball and skipped all the great nightlife on Saturday night, wake up early and support Mothers Against Drunk Driving by joining their walk/run at Huizenga Park. Details on the official MADD website.

The FTLC Presents Digital Love Mixtape, Volume I

11 tracks from the musicians that have played Digital Love at the Green Room

Readers of this site are probably well aware of the FTLC’s love of weekly Thursday party Digital Love. Just about every week, we name-drop the party in our weekend previews and/or music-related posts. Yes, it’s true — I’m one of the two resident DJs of the party; however, that’s not the main reason why we continually plug the event on a multi-post basis. The fact is, Digital Love has hosted some amazing local musicians from all over our tri-county area (and in 1 case, all the way from Chi-town, track #11). To celebrate the inaugural 2 & 1/2 months of the event that’s re-inventing FTL Thursday nights, we’ve decided to release a mixtape of all the musicians that have graced Digital Love’s raised stage.

If you enjoy what you hear, make sure you ‘Like’ this post to help spread the word on some of our local acts.

FYI: Panic Bomber (track #10) and Pocket Of Lollipops (track #8) perform this coming Thursday, April 28th.

Download the entire compilation HERE or stream below.
